Built on a hill overlooking the French Valley, the church of Sainte-Croix is a very fine example of Romanesque architecture in the Cévennes.
It has a simple plan: a single nave of two bays, a short right choir bay which ends in a semi-circular apse with a cul-de-four vault. A chapel to the north, also Romanesque, completes the plan. But what is particularly remarkable here is the care taken in the execution and the matching of the schist stones. Thus, despite a rustic aesthetic characterised by the massive appearance of the building, one can observe, particularly at the rear of the building, that the courses are very well refined and the stones cut with great precision.
This know-how demonstrates a great mastery of construction techniques.
It contains two pictorial works, including a restored Holy Family by Paul Chevandier de Valdrôme and an unsigned Crucifixion.
