France, Japan, 2026, 3h16 – Directed by Ryusuke Hamaguchi, starring Virginie Efira, Tao Okamoto and Gabriel Dahmani – Drama, romance – Best Actress Award – Cannes Film Festival – French version with subtitles
Marie-Lou, the director of a care home for the elderly, is trying to introduce an innovative care philosophy based on listening to and respecting the dignity of the residents, despite the reluctance of some of her staff. Her encounter with Mari, a Japanese theatre director battling cancer, will turn her life on its head. As they form a deep friendship, the two women join forces in a struggle to “make the impossible possible”.
You might well think it drags on, or feel thrown off balance, for example, by this unexpected exposé of harmful capitalism, but you’ll soon be swept away by flashes of brilliance that rival one another in beauty and tenderness. As pure as crystal, the friendship between these two women conveys a single message: let’s look after one another.
