Romania, France, Scandinavian countries, 2026, 2 hours 27 minutes – Directed by Cristian Mungiu, starring Sebastian Stan, Renate Reinsve and Alin Panc
Drama Suitable for ages 12 and over – Palme d’Or at Cannes – Original version with subtitles
The Gheorghius, a deeply religious Romanian-Norwegian couple, move to a village at the end of a fjord, where they quickly befriend their neighbours. The children from both families become very close, despite their different upbringings. When the school staff discover bruises on the body of Elia, the eldest of the Gheorghiu children, the community wonders whether the traditional upbringing the children receive from their parents might be the cause.
The film, as matter-of-fact as a demonstration and as poetic as the sea, never takes sides but highlights the limitations of two camps which, each in their own way, advocate tolerance. A masterpiece of cinema, rightly acclaimed.
