LES BANCELS CEVENOLS

At the heart of the Cévennes National Park, registered at UNESCO, were built, with patience and courage, terraces called 'bancels'. These Cévennes works are the reflection of a very harsh reality. First, they were carved, shaped by generations of farmers to cultivate, on the side of mountains, vine, olive trees, fodder or cereals before climate cooled during the 16th century. After this era, chestnut and blackberry farming was developed at the same time. It was manual labour, from building the terraces to harvesting the productions. They had to continuously rearrange the 'bancels' after violent rain storms in the Cévennes.
