The city is located at the crossroads of three remarkable geological sites: schist in the Cévennes, granite on the Mont Lozère and limestone on the Causses.
Since the 12th, Florac has been a small town. Its houses are grouped around the church and the castle. Around 1130, Benedictine monks of the Chaise-Dieu abbey built a monastery. The town was once surrounded by a ditch. Located in an area of passage, Florac becomes a commercial town.
Nowadays, it is nice to wander in the alleys, to discover the many covered passages and small squares. During summer, the town unveils its meridional face. The esplanade under the shade of plane trees and the squares invite to have a drink or eat a meal.
